Formed in 1965, the Autism Society of America is regarded as the leading source of information and referral on autism. Today, over 220 chapters exist in 48 states with a membership base of over 18,000. Often, children so affected must cope with teasing from their peers as well as dealing with their medical conditions. Beach Center on Families and Disability
In 1988, the National Institute of Disability Research and Rehabilitation, (part of the Department of Education), established the Beach Center on Families and Disability. Each Beach Center research project is designed to strengthen the motivation, resource, and skills of families. The Beach Center believes people with disabilities and their families are strong, and should be encouraged to envision a better life with the rights and skills to make those dreams a reality.
